English, Art & Technology: Authentic Learning Project
Welcome!
Myths and Legends is an authentic learning project that demonstrates how technology is being used as cognitive tools in a primary school classroom to support student learning and engagement.
Background
This is a cross curriculum project that incorporates English, Art & Technology for year 7 students. This project links to what students are learning in their History lessons this semester (semester 3, 2012) about significant beliefs, values, and practices of the ancient Romans. Students should have spent many weeks reading and viewing a range of myths and legends before starting this project.
Project overview
This project requires students to assume the roles of a writer, an artist and a professional movie maker. It will enable students to put their learning about the language, characters, settings and events used in myths and legends literary texts into practical action. They will select a specific myth or legend, write their own interpretation of the story and create a stop motion claymation video using Movie Maker. In groups of four they will brainstorm their story ideas, document their storyboard, paint the backgrounds and build clay characters and other props required to tell their story. They will photograph their scenes, import them into Movie Maker and sound and effects to develop a short stop motion video. At the end of the project the whole class will watch the videos on the Smartboard and then complete an online survey to vote for their favourite video. Videos will be uploaded to YouTube by the Teacher to enable students to showcase their work to other students, family members and friends.
Acknowledgement
Many thanks to Mrs Patton (teacher) and Miss Neville (student teacher) for allowing me to visit their classroom to document and share the fantastic work they are doing with their students.
